Subscriptions

WordPress Site Content Editors can offer subscriptions to the Kalamazoo College community. Subscribers will receive email notification of new posts shortly after they are published.

How to add a Subscribe Button to your Site

  • The easiest way to add a subscribe button is to use the [subscribe-button] shortcode. Simply type [subscribe-button] (include the brackets) where you want the button to appear.
  • If you prefer to style your own subscribe link or button, you can create a button or link text of your choice. For the URL, enter https://yoursite.kzoo.edu/?kzoosub=1 (substitute your own site’s subdomain name for yoursite). This is the way to add a subscribe link from a site other than your own, or in an email.

What your Visitors Experience

When your site visitor clicks on the button or link, they will need to log in, then they will be added to the list and see a confirmation message. No work on your part!

Thereafter, anytime you publish a new post, they will receive an email with each of your new posts

Subscription Emails

Email is sent to each subscriber on your list 10 minutes after you publish a post. You can safely change it in that time frame and the updated version will be sent. You can also unpublish the post in the 10 minute timeframe to stop the emails from being sent.

The email is sent from the Hornet Hive with a subject line consisting of your Site Name + Post Title. The message is comprised of:

  • the post title,
  • featured image (if any),
  • post excerpt (usually the first 55 words of your post, but can be customized in the Document pane of the post editing screen),
  • a link to the full post on your site,
  • and an unsubscribe link.

Managing your Subscriber List

Your WordPress dashboard has a Subscriber widget that tells you how many people have subscribed to your posts, and their email addresses.

In a future release, we will give you the ability to add and remove subscribers from the list. Stay tuned!

Limitations

  • Only people with Kalamazoo College (KNET) logins can subscribe
  • Sites on the www.kzoo.edu domain (i.e. address starts with www.kzoo.edu) can not use this feature
  • New pages are not included in outgoing announcements — only new posts.
  • Updating a post will not result in another email blast.
